Efficient Collection System as a Precondition for High Quality Recycling

Author: Andoni Uriarte (Technical Director of RECIRCULA)

ABSTRACT

Europe faces the urgent challenge of abandoning the current linear model of production and consumption (extract, produce, consume and dispose of) to implement a circular economy model in which the life of the products is extended, and in the end that its useful life, the materials return to become raw material.

The EU has endowed itself with the Circular Economy Package to implement this model change, and has approved a package of Directives, including the Waste Framework Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, in order to pass from linear to circular, from waste to resources.

One of the pillars on which this strategy rests is the Recycling of products, giving them a new life with similar added value than the original and avoiding the manufacture of new products, thus closing the circle and supporting another fundamental concept in the Waste Hierarchy: Prevention.

An aspect always very associated with recycling, is the collection method used to select the different waste. We will use PET beverage containers to explain that the way in which they are recovered is critical to define their index of circularity and their subsequent recyclability. The Single use Plastic Directive Proposal of the European Commission sets the objective of recovering 90% of the plastic bottles in 2025, and for this recommends two methods to achieve it: a separate collection system, or a Deposit Retrun Scheeme. Only with a monomaterial collection of the plastic bottles will be possible to achive a «bottle2bottle model”.
